Introduction

This 13-day Peekye Trek & Kathmandu Valley Cultural Tour is a uniquely designed Himalayan Tour that combines a relatively off-the-beaten-path trek with an in-depth cultural exploration of Kathmandu Valley. This itinerary is moderately challenging, suitable for trekkers of all levels with good physical fitness and a spirit of adventure. Your journey begins in Kathmandu (1,350 m), where you will be welcomed by a representative of Happy Feet Mountaineers and transferred to your hotel.

Kathmandu, the heart of Nepal, is a city where ancient myths and living history intertwine. Your journey begins on the second day with a full-day guided tour of iconic Swayambhunath Stupa, dating back to around 250 B.C.; Patan, the “City of the Arts,” a former independent Buddhist city-state; and Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old royal palace complex, home to the residence of the Living Goddess, Kumari, and a walk through the bustling Ason Bazaar, offering a glimpse into the daily life of Nepalese people.

The trekking portion begins with a long but scenic 8-hour drive to Pattale Dhap (2,800 m), the trek starting point, 240 kilometers east of Kathmandu. Over the next few days, you’ll follow stunning ridge-line trails through lush pine and rhododendron forests and traditional Sherpa and Magar villages. You will trek to Japre (2,920 m), a tiny village with a small monastery and stupa, then to Chhamdingma (3,250 m), passing through beautiful meadows and yak-herder shacks. A highlight of the trek is a sunrise pilgrimage to Peekye Top, where you will witness one of the greatest panoramas of the Himalayas, including Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Manaslu, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri. The trek then continues to Jasawarngyang (3,670 m) and then to Junbesi (2,700 m), an ancient Sherpa settlement. Here, you will spend a cultural day visiting Thupten Chöling Monastery, the most significant and active religious center, founded by the revered Trulshik Rinpoche.

The final days of the trek will take you to Phaplu (2,425 m) via the Chiwang Monastery, perched on a sheer cliff with 360-degree views, before driving or flying back to Kathmandu. The last full day in Nepal is dedicated to visiting three more UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, the best-preserved medieval city of Bhaktapur, and the colossal Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the Kathmandu Valley, and the trip concludes.

The best time for this circuit trek is mid-March to June, when the hills bloom with rhododendrons, magnolias, and orchids, and October to January, when the Himalayas offer the clearest views. This extraordinary trek combines a medium-high-altitude trek, a profound cultural immersion in Sherpa communities, visits to ancient monasteries, and the unparalleled experience of standing before the world’s highest peaks, every day from start to finish.

Arrive in Kathmandu, complete customs, and transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing or exploring the city’s vibrant streets.

The best time is mid-March to June, when the days are mostly clear for views and the hills and valleys are alive with rhododendrons, magnolias, and orchids in full bloom. But you may encounter occasional short rains in the lower valley and hail above 2500 meters, as clouds and rain build up for summer.

July to January is an excellent time to travel here to enjoy the vast greenery, yak pasturing on high rolling hills, flower-carpeted meadows, spectacular waterfalls, and river lines. The lower valley fills with lush terraced rice fields, while the mid-hills grow maize, millet, potatoes, beans, chilies, and everything else that thrives there.

October to January is Nepal’s best time for clear Himalayan views, for which Nepal is globally known. Most days are clear, offering spectacular views of the Himalayas and the landscape. Peekye is one such strategic region, offering views of half of Nepal from its many vantage points along the trek up or down, which requires clear weather.

Mid-January to early March are the primary winter months, and one may find snow and ice in some shaded areas. Temperatures at Peekye can drop to -15 degrees after sunset and rise to 5 to 13 degrees during the day.
