The Hillary Step

The Hillary Step is the vertical rock face located at an altitude of 8,790 metres above sea level, just near the summit of Mount Everest. The Step, named after Sir Edmund Hillary, is located halfway between the South Summit and the true summit, on the southeast ridge, and is the last obstacle to all climbers climbing Everest via the southeast route, the typical Nepal-side Everest Climbing Route. This section is hazardous for climbing up to the summit and on the descent due to its steep ridge route, with both sides vertically falling to 3000 meters. This section also requires much time for climbers because only one climber at a time can traverse it, both going up and down. However, the ascent and descent over the Step are safe with a fixed rope climbing anchored by each season’s Everest Rope Fixing team

. The 2015 earthquake moved out of the prominent rock boulder, changing Hillary Step’s existence.
