Introduction

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is an adventure around the far-eastern Himalayas of Nepal, offering one of the best walks into the sheer wilderness of high mountains. Few trekkers venture into the scenic Arun and Barun valleys, making this trek a rare chance to escape villages and human habitation for weeks and enjoy a pristine environment. More than a trek, it is a spiritual pilgrimage to the sacred ‘Beyul Khembalung’, a ‘hidden land’ blessed by Guru Padmasambhava as a holy refuge for times of turmoil. This journey to Khembalung is not just a physical feat but a spiritual odyssey, a testament to enduring faith.

Your Makalu Base Camp Trek begins in Kathmandu with arrival and acclimatization, followed by a scenic panoramic flight to Tumlingtar, one of the lowest and warmest parts of the Arun Valley. A rugged jeep ride brings you to Seeduwa or Num, the gateway to Makalu Barun National Park. After an overnight stop, the trek begins through high hills with tremendous views of the Makalu range, passing rural farm villages and lovely, tended terraced fields before descending into serene forests of tall pines and rhododendrons.

The trek ascends through lush forests and Sherpa villages, including Tashi Gaon, the last permanent settlement. This protected area is rich in unique flora and fauna, and the trail climbs through dense, beautiful rhododendron, oak, and pine forests, leaving human habitation behind for over a week. The journey is intentionally arduous, designed to test a seeker’s limits as you traverse high passes like Shipton La (4,050 m), past the striking Kalo Pokhari (Black Lake), and descend into the spectacular, lush Barun Valley, a picturesque area enclosed by high cliffs and mountains. Here you reach the sacred caves of Beyul Khembalung near Yangle Kharka, a gateway to a realm where the physical and spiritual worlds overlap.

This upper valley leads you on a gradual ascent past yak herders’ camps into an increasingly rugged, alpine landscape. The climax is the arrival at Makalu Base Camp (4,870 m), a dramatic glacial basin beneath the imposing walls of Mt. Makalu (8,485 m), the world’s fifth-highest peak, was first conquered by a French expedition on May 15, 1955, along with Baruntse. A dedicated exploration day offers a challenging hike to a 5,250-meter ridge, providing one of the world’s most spectacular mountain panoramas, including rare views of the east face of Everest, the formidable Kangshung Face, and a series of giant peaks. This powerful tradition demonstrates how a demanding physical journey through a magnificent landscape can lead directly to profound inner transformation.

The return journey retraces the route through the beautiful Barun Valley and back over the high passes, offering another chance to take in the surroundings. The walk ends at Num, followed by a drive to Tumlingtar and a flight to Kathmandu for a well-deserved celebration. As you look back on the challenging yet rewarding journey, a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment will wash over you, leaving memories that will last a lifetime.

Seasons:

The best time to trek in the Makalu Base Camp is from late March to June, when most of the day is clear for viewing. The hills are alive with wildflowers, especially rhododendrons, the national flower of Nepal, in various colors.

September to December is another good season. Most days are beautiful and clear, with breathtaking views of the Himalayas and landscapes. However, with shorter daylight hours, temperatures can drop to freezing, and light snow can occur in some parts.

Except during the winter months (January to the end of February), August and September are equally recommended for enjoying its lush valleys and rolling alpine meadows carpeted with brilliant flowers and rare medicinal plants.
