Khumbu Icefall

The Khumbu Glacier, situated in the Everest Region, is fed by large towers of ice seracs, making enormous ice blocks tumble into the glacier. The limited area with such activity is known as the Icefall Route. Most climbers cross the Icefall section very early in the morning, before sunrise, when it is less active due to the degree of frost. As the sun’s heat warms the atmosphere, the chances of opening crevasses and breaking and falling ice chunks and snow increase, which is the most dangerous time to cross the Khumbu Icefall. It takes at least three hours to ascend through the section (tend to make the journey in 6–7 hours). Camp One, at 19,500ft., is just after the crossing of the Khumbu Icefall and is used by some teams as a low camp to acclimatize.

The Icefall Route section gets fixed with rope and ladders, and those responsible for this route fixing are called “Icefall Doctors”! And they are liable for setting ladders and regularly checking the route conditions in the sections.
