Bird Watching Tour Nepal

Because of its exceptional topography and climate – Nepal is an ideal habitat for a wide variety of birds. Especially Chitwan National Park, Bardia National Park and its surrounding buffer zones provide Nepal’s best birdwatching experiences. This avian paradise offers a habitat for well over 400 species, including numerous birds of prey. From the flatlands of the Terai to the Chure Hills in the north, Chitwan and Bardia National Park have a range of habitats that give ample opportunity for spotting wide varieties of birds for both experienced and amateur birdwatchers. The riverine plains of these areas are temporary homes to migratory birds from Siberia, China, India, Mongolia and Tibet. These National Parks are not only an ideal home for many species of birds but also a sanctuary for rare one-horned rhinoceros and Bengal tigers.

Best time for Birdwatching

As soon as the winter Birds that come to Nepal from the north travel back at the start of the spring, the spring and summer migratory birds start travelling to Nepal. Every year, with the arrival of spring, birds from India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh travel about 1,700 miles to reach Nepal. They spend most of the day searching for suitable sites, such as easy-to-find food and bathing to build nests. The birds start arriving in Nepal from the beginning of mid-February to nest, and by April, more than 60 species of birds reach their destination, Nepal. The family of Cuckoo species, including the Jacobin cuckoo, travel about 6,000 miles from the sub-Saharan region of South Africa and enter Nepal by the end of May with the onset of pre-monsoon. Most birds that migrate to Nepal nest in Chitwan, Bardia, Shuklaphanta, Parsa and Banke National Parks. Similarly, they also nest in  Shivapuri Forest, in the Kathmandu Valley, Koshi Tappu wildlife reserve and Annapurna Conservation Area. So far, 888 species of birds have been recorded in Nepal.
