The Classic Everest Base Camp Trekking, or Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek, is one of the great walk experiences in the Himalayas of Nepal. The Jiri to Everest Base Camp trekking trail offers an excellent opportunity to walk the old original trail and explore the scenic and cultural highlights of the Ramechhap and Solu Khumbu districts. The Jiri to Everest Base Camp trail was once frequented by dedicated trekkers. Currently, it remains an almost forgotten trekking trail after the airstrip in Lukla was built in the 1965s. This change has preserved the cultural purity and other factors of the Lower Everest Region, which is home to a diverse range of tribal groups such as Sherpa, Limbu, Rai, Magar, Newar, Tamang, and other ethnic minorities of eastern Nepal who primarily engage in agriculture and animal husbandry.

The Jiri to Everest Base Camp Journey Begins

The Jiri to Everest Base Camp Journey begins with an exciting overland journey to Jiri, once known as the Switzerland of Nepal due to its stunning landscapes, high snow-capped peaks, verdant valleys, and green rolling hills, all enhanced by agricultural development initiatives from the Swiss Government Aid in 1938. Jiri was previously the only entry and exit point for all pre-expedition and trekkers heading to the Everest region. Although a motorable road now bypasses Jiri, allowing further travel to Shivalaya or Bhandar, starting the trek overnight at Jiri remains the best and most attractive option.

The Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek Ancient Path

The Jiri to Everest base camp trek follows the ancient path from Jiri through Shivalaya, Deurali, Chyangma (Bhandar), Kinja, Sete, Lamjura La, and Junbesi. The charming Junbesi village is a favourite rest spot for trekkers and mountaineers, offering opportunities for a side trip to the Thupten Choling monastery. The entire trail presents excellent panoramas of the Tseringma (Gauri Shanker), Karyi Lung, and Dudh Kunda mountain ranges and opportunities to experience rural life encompassing Buddhist and Hindu cultures preserved and passed down through generations.

Entering the Khumbu Region

From Junbesi village, the trail continues northeast through Ringmo, Taksindu, Nunthala, Khari Khola, Chaurikharka, and Phakding, allowing trekkers to visit hamlets of Sherpas, Tamang, and Rai. This journey leads to the Khumbu region, reaching Namche Bazaar, one of the most famous locations in the area. Namche Bazaar is the central hub for trekkers and the local Sherpa community.

Jiri to Everest base camp Trekking Through the Himalayas

After Namche Bazaar, the great walk continues through the villages of Tengboche, Pangboche, Dingboche, Pheriche, and Lobuche, the major Sherpa villages around the base of the great Himalayas. Walking through these deep Himalayan valleys, adorned with vast ice fields and glaciers encircled by the colossal peaks of Lhotse, Nuptse, and Lola, which surround Mt. Everest, is a magic.

The Return Journey on Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek

After reaching Everest Base Camp and the Kala Patthar Viewpoint, the two globally renowned points, you will return to Lukla, revelling in the incredible panoramas offered by the Classic Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek.

Seasons:

The best time for this itinerary is mid-March to June, when the hills are alive with wildflowers, especially rhododendrons in various colors, followed by magnolias and orchids. The areas from Jiri to Tengboche are dense with rhododendron forest. For clear weather, Spring is the second-best time, with pretty hazy daylight. Spring also builds rain clouds for the summer season, bringing clouds, occasional rain in the lower valley, and occasional hail above 2000 meters, offering diverse weather experience and it’s also the long-daylight period.

October to January is the best time of year to trek in the entire Himalayas. Most days offer fine, crystal-clear weather day and night, but daylight is short, and temperatures drop to freezing above 4000 meters.
