Tihar and Laxmi Puja (Festival of Lights): (October-November)

This festival begins just a fortnight after the end of Dashain. The mood of the earlier celebration, heightened by the return of balmy weather, continues unabated. This festival lasts for five days and is marked by the worship of crows, dogs, cows, brothers and sisters every several days. The most charming sight of this festival is the illumination of the entire town with rows of tiny flickering oil lamps at the onset of dusk on the day of Laxmi Puja. In the evening of Laxmi Puja, the Laxmi, goddess of wealth, is worshipped in every household with myriads of lamps to welcome her. The brothers’ day is the last day of the festival, and the sisters show their affection towards their brothers by performing a puja followed by a delectable meal. They worship for their brothers’ long lives to Yama, the god of death, and both brothers and sisters pray for the well-being of each other and vow to protect each other.
