Buddha Jayanti is one of the most celebrated days for Nepalese, a time when the entire community comes together in unity and harmony. Buddha Jayanti day, which falls on the full moon of the month of Baisakh (The first month of Nepali Calendar), is celebrated to commemorate the birth, attainment of enlightenment and the death of Gautama Buddha more than 2,500 years ago. Prayers get chanted, and worship is offered by devotees in Buddhist shrines throughout the country, including Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, the Light of Asia. A great fair is held annually at Lumbini, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath on this day.
